Phrases I Dislike

Intuition Pump

I don’t have much of a reason for this one. It’s just not a good intuition pump itself for its semantic content. Also, as with many terms I see in the rationalist community, it seems to be inventing a new and abstruse phrase for something we already have words for. Just say analogy, parable, etc.

“It’s just…”

So much joy, enchantment, and curiosity could be regained by omitting the word “just” from predicative sentences.

“Humans are just meat machines”: nihilistic, boring.

“Humans are meat machines”: interesting, cool, leaves room for other wacky stuff.

Normie

This term is belligerent without sufficient reason. It serves as a polemic and a cue for snickering, but does not do a good job of actually communicating anything of substance to anyone. Those whom it targets will likely be turned off of conversation; those saying it pigeon-hole people and don’t say anything new. It’s a thought-terminating cliche and a symptom of lazy thinking.
